About Rapid Battery Chargers
The advantages of using a rapid battery charger can be substantial. For example, a person waiting at an airport for a flight may have just one hour or less to recharge a laptop computer or netbook. Once the traveler gets on that flight, he will no longer be able to charge the battery. If he uses a fast charging system, he will get more energy into the laptop's battery during the recharge. That means more minutes or hours worth of time on the computer during the flight where there is no way to recharge the battery. The same thing happens with other devices such as PDAs, cell phones, and power razors. And the problem doesn't just come up at airports. People are often too busy to spend the hours necessary to get a full recharge with a standard charger.
A rapid battery charger works by getting more energy in the battery during the charging process. However, the danger of high temperatures increases as well. In order to combat this problem, fast chargers use a cooling fan to keep the temperature within an acceptable range. In many cases, the battery itself has control circuitry to prevent damage to the battery's cells during a fast charge. Nevertheless, there are fast battery chargers that are capable of doing a rapid charge to batteries that lack the control circuitry.
When looking at a rapid battery charger, consumers should look at the charging rate. This is also known as the C or C-rate. The size of the battery along with the charge rate per hour determines how fast the battery can be charged. For example, a C rate of one on a charger might mean that a battery can be charged within one hour while a fast charger with a C rate of two may charge that battery within just a half hour. Keep in mind that these ideal circumstances assumes that the battery has the control circuitry to be rapidly charged. Also, it is assumed that the battery is 100% efficient at taking the charge. Over time, the battery will have degraded performance in its ability to be recharged. If the battery has had too many charge cycles, it may need to be replaced.

Even though the rapid battery charger is not perfect, it does usually work to recharge electronic devices faster. All that is needed is for the consumer to own a battery that is in good condition which is capable being on a fast recharge. |
